What is risograph printing?
Risograph printing is a technique best described as ‘digital screen printing’ – because the process is like traditional screen printing, but with the convenience of an office copier. Risograph printing is special because of the imperfections caused by unprocessed inks and the layering of images, known as registration and overprinting.
The story behind this risograph print:
This new riso print is a photograph of my original painting titled ‘Hideaway’. (pictured below)
It was inspired by cosy little spaces from my childhood. I loved to build blanket and pillow forts. It was always so cramped and inadequately built (maybe not enough pillows!), but it allowed me to be hidden away while I’d read comics or played my Gameboy.
This self-portrait of my inner child is surrounded by soft toys that represent my siblings in their zodiac animal form, three sisters, and a brother. My childhood is them, and they are my childhood, and I am grateful. The trail of origami stars is the connection between us, delicate and fragile, but still a bond no matter what. 🐒🐃🐇🐍🐃✨️
For this painting, I experimented with stamping Chiyogami-inspired decorative patterns. This was definitely a learning curve, and I enjoyed going through the motions and so pleased with the outcome.
