Geological Aeons – Unique handmade brooch by NancyDee Sculptures

I became interest in geological strata when I took a rafting trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. The layers in the slate reminded me of this experience. The hunk of metal I mounted on top was equally interesting geologically. It looked as if it could have dropped in from a meteor.

Description

I created this 5x7cm one-of-a-kind brooch called Geological Aeons on an arrow-shaped piece of black slate. It features a strangely shaped hunk of rusted metal that I mounted on it. I found all the bits and bobs needed to make this brooch on the streets during my daily walks.

Normally I create wall sculptures and 3D sculptures from the wood, metal and tiles I find on the streets of Melbourne. However, through Instagram I met handmade jewellery designer Lynn Powers from New Orleans. She encouraged me to try making jewellery from the objects I found on the street, but I never had.

Then in 2019, I saw that the Contemporary Art Society of Victoria was holding its Australian National Brooch Show at the Fitzroy and Eltham public libraries. I displayed five of my brooches–and found that making them is great fun. In 2020, my brooches were in Wearable Art at The Old Auction House in Kyneton and online in Survival Kit at the University of Melbourne George Paton Gallery.

In 2021, as part of Geelong and Melbourne Design Weeks, my brooches were featured in exhibitions at The Reimaginarium in Geelong and again at The Old Auction House in Kyneton. A special series using handmade 19th-Century nails from a friend’s roof were in the 2021 Australian National Brooch show, and I have been in every brooch show since. It’s hard to stop once you start!

Of course, my brooches are always available through Incube8r Gallery, in the Fitzroy shop, as well as online.

Sculptures & brooches from upcycled street and beach found objects

My name is Nancy D Lane. I am a found object assemblage artist working as NancyDee Sculptures. I love creating sculptures, brooches and art magnets from the metal, wood, tile and plastic I find on streets and beaches – mostly in Melbourne, though on my travels as well.My works range in size from less than 2×2cm to more than 2 metres. My art is inspired by the challenge of happenstance, using only the materials I pick up on my daily walks.I work as an artist in residence at River Studios in West Melbourne. I have had 7 solo exhibitions and participated in more than 60 group exhibitions. Most importantly, I am commited to sustainability and hope that my creative use of unloved and unwanted trash will serve as a reminder of the 5Rs: refuse, reduce, repurpose, reuse, and recycle.
