Christmas Tyre Balance Tree 6 – Wall sculpture by NancyDee Sculptures

I love making unusual Christmas trees from the trash I find on Melbourne’s streets. Assembling them is harder than it looks, especially finding tyre balance weights in descending sizes. There are a lot more small ones, broken ones and misshapen ones on the road than there are useable ones. I hope you enjoy the results of my many street foraging walks.

I created this 10x10cm wall sculpture called Christmas Tyre Balance Tree 6 from a red tile, tyre balance weights and a gold star. I found all the bits and pieces on the streets of Melbourne during my daily walks. It comes with a display stand so you can set it on a mantelpiece, table, book shelf or wherever for the Christmas holidays. My name is Nancy D Lane, and I am a found object assemblage artist and jewellery designer working under the name NancyDee Sculptures. I create wall sculptures, 3D sculptures and brooches from the metal, wood, tiles and plastic that I pick up off the streets. Many of my works are inspired by the Melbourne skyline, especially at sunrise and sunset. Often I try to incorporate ‘natural features’ – a bent nail that suggests a meandering river, rusted sheet metal that transforms into a cloud, or a broken tile that becomes a mountain. My more abstract works are stimulated by the found objects themselves, which I often place in juxtaposition. At other times, I emphasise their rusted, scratched or variegated surfaces. My art is inspired by a strong interest in sustainability through repurposing and upcycling. Too many of our Christmas decorations are transient, purchased a few weeks before the holiday and discarded a few weeks later. My hope is that this work finds a more permanent home and that every year, it makes you smile. At the same time, I hope it also reminds you of the 5Rs to help our planet: refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle.

Sculptures & brooches from upcycled street and beach found objects

My name is Nancy D Lane. I am a found object assemblage artist working as NancyDee Sculptures. I love creating sculptures, brooches and art magnets from the metal, wood, tile and plastic I find on streets and beaches – mostly in Melbourne, though on my travels as well.My works range in size from less than 2×2cm to more than 2 metres. My art is inspired by the challenge of happenstance, using only the materials I pick up on my daily walks.I work as an artist in residence at River Studios in West Melbourne. I have had 7 solo exhibitions and participated in more than 60 group exhibitions. Most importantly, I am commited to sustainability and hope that my creative use of unloved and unwanted trash will serve as a reminder of the 5Rs: refuse, reduce, repurpose, reuse, and recycle.
