Our artists keep 100% of their sales!

What we’re about

We believe that handmade has a strong societal value, and that now more than ever, locally made is super important. That’s why we work to empower local makers, helping them sell their products and teaching them how to turn their hobby into a business.

We run our spaces to be as interactive as possible and encourage our cubers and the general public to engage with us through our memberships, our group exhibitions, our workshops and as patrons of the arts.

We don’t see any reason to buy mass-produced when you can support small businesses, often run by parents of young children, retired people finally doing what they love, students, full time artists and dabblers.

There’s so much that can be created right here in Melbourne, and by supporting local businesses we’re shortening the supply chain and helping the public buy directly from the maker.

Our values

We pride ourselves in being

  • LGBTQIA+ Friendly & inclusive
  • Neurodivergent & disability friendly
  • Open minded and open-hearted
  • Creative & Crafty
  • Changemakers – we’re creating something special here at in.cube8r!

Meet the team

The in.cube8r team is made up of artists and creatives who love all things Australian handmade and supporting local makers. Most of our team members are creatives and small business owners themselves, or have worked in creative/marketing industries.

We understand the challenges that makers and artists face marketing their products, and with our combined experience across jewellery, fashion, visual art and object design we can support our cubers and assist them with selling their work in our shops.

Elle-May (May Michaels)

(she/they)

Elle took over in.cube8r in Feb 2016 after 10 years in a rewarding career doing marketing for Australian charities. Since arriving Elle has transformed in.cube8r and given it new life, opening a second in.cube8r in Prahran from 2019-2021, and then opening in.cube8r Melbourne Central in 2022.

Elle-May helps creatives, makers and artists create their dream side-hustles through curation and promotion and community building, as well as providing mentorship to makers who need a little hand holding along the way. They’re not big on traditional “business speak” and break things down to the basics to help clients understand not only why they need to take the steps in their plan, but how to take them. Elle is there to hold your hand through the more boring bits of crafting your own business. More at maymichaels.com

Melbourne Central Store

With more than 180 artists renting a cube to sell their work, our Melbourne Central concept store is fast becoming the go-to place for artist made gifts in Melbourne.

Catering to a younger audience, this store showcases many of the most popular artists found in Australia’s pup culture convention scene

However this store also caters to our handmade loving audience, with many cubes filled with handmade jewellery, clothing home goods and more from Local Artisans.

This store opened August 2024, after a trial pop-up lasting just over a year nearby in the centre. The store has been built for purpose and features our iconic swirled floors (but this time in PINK) and a rainbow tunnel!

Fitzroy Flagship Store

Established in July 2007, this space was the first of it’s kind. Artists rent spaces to exhibit their work without paying commission on sales; the only space in Melbourne operating in this way.

in.cube8r started small, but dreams big. Now in it’s teens, it’s getting ready to become all grown up, and branch out to bigger and greener pastures, to sell more art & find more art lovers in shopping centres around Australia.

The flagship store Fitzroy though, it’s got something special to offer. This store is all about handmade, with more handmade clothing, jewellery, ceramics and other creations than our other stores which cater towards a more commercial demographic.

At Fitzroy, no product is too obscure, we love the unusual and we love nothing more than helping people find something for that hard-to-buy-for someone in their life.
